Submit WebSite URL/Sitemap To Google[How To Guide]

One of the major things that you should do when you start a website or blog, is to submit it to search engines. We have already given a step by step guide as to how to submit your website to Bing, Microsoft’s decision search engine. In this article, we cover the steps to submit site to Google, the search engine that makes up more than 70% of all internet search.

Here is how you can submit your site to Google.

Method 1: Submit URL to Google

This is a one time job. You just have to submit your homepage URL to Google, and hope that Google indexes all your content. Head over to Google Add URL page, enter your website URL, and hit ‘Add URL’.

While this method is the easiest one, and does not require any technical knowledge of creating and submitting sitemaps, this is only suitable for website owners who don’t have regularly updated content. In case of blogs or other daily updated websites, we recommend method 2.

Method 2: Submit Sitemap To Google Webmaster Tools

For all those serious bloggers and webmasters, we recommend you use Google’s webmaster tools to keep a track of your website in Google’s index. Here are the steps to get started with Google Webmaster:

1. Head over to Google Webmaster Tools, and sign up if you haven’t already done it.

2. Click on ‘Add a site’, and give your website url (e.g. www.turningtrack.om). Click Continue.

3. In the next step, you are required to verify the ownership of the site that you have just added. There are two ways to complete this verification. One is to add a HTML META tag while the other is to upload a file to the root of your site. We recommend the meta tag method, as it is easier amongst the two.

Copy and paste the Meta tag to your site’s HEAD section (between <head> and </head> tags). Once you are done, click on ‘Verify’.

WordPress: In case you are a WordPress user, simply paste the meta tag code in Header.php file between the <head> and </head> tags as shown in screenshot below. After saving the file, click on ‘Verify’ in Google webmaster Tools verify ownership page (above screenshot).

5. That’s it. You now have successfully added a website to Google Webmaster Tools. You will now be able to see the newly added website listed in your webmaster tools home page. Clicking on the site will take you to the main dashboard for that site.

6. From the left panel, click ‘Site configuration’ to enlarge the list, and then click ‘Sitemaps’ to open the Sitemaps page in the right panel. Click on ‘Submit a Sitemap’, add the sitemap file relative path from your website URL in the text box, and click ‘Submit Sitemap’.
